When Does Brickwork Need Repointing?

Repointing means raking out old, failing mortar between bricks and replacing it with fresh mortar. Done at the right time it protects your walls and refreshes their look. Leave it too long and water gets in, causing damp and frost damage.

Signs your mortar needs attention

  • Mortar that's crumbling, cracked or sandy to the touch
  • Gaps or recesses where mortar has fallen out
  • Bricks that feel loose or move slightly
  • Damp patches inside on external walls
  • Green algae or moss on the joints

Why it matters

Mortar is the first line of defence against Welsh weather. Once it fails, water soaks into the wall, freezes, expands and does more damage — so timely repointing saves you money in the long run.
